Short answer
How did Flower Mound get its name?
Flower Mound is named for a natural mound that rises about 50 feet above the surrounding land and carries remnant native tall-grass prairie and wildflowers. The Town describes the mound as its namesake, and it remains a preserved landmark today.
Prairie and the mound
Before settlement, the area was a mix of Blackland and tall-grass prairie and Cross Timbers woodland. The mound itself is a remnant of that prairie.
Early settlement
Settlers arrived in the mid-1800s. Yoakley's Store, established in 1880, became a community gathering point.
Grapevine Lake
Construction of Grapevine Lake began in 1952, reshaping the area's southern edge; the lake was completed in the 1950s.
Incorporation in 1961
Residents incorporated Flower Mound in 1961, in part to avoid annexation by Irving.
Growth and preservation
Residential growth accelerated in the late twentieth century, alongside DFW Airport's influence. The Town adopted conservation planning in its western Cross Timbers area, and more recently Lakeside DFW, River Walk and west-side districts have shaped its commercial life.
Today
The Town's 2025 estimate puts the population at more than 81,000, up from 75,956 in the 2020 Census, with long-range projections above 110,000 by 2045.
